Today I read a letter that my awesome nephew,we'll call him Aman (pronounced uh-man), had sent to his brother who is on a mission. In this letter Aman talks about how lucky he feels to be "a man"...now prepare yourselves because he says some pretty crazy stuff, but also, take comfort because I know Aman, and I know how glorious he believes women are and also that he is Sweets' and my biggest fan (in other words he Knows what we have is pretty dang awesome). Quote:
"On almost all levels I count myself lucky to be a man. The female gender just seems to have so many drawbacks; giving birth, raising kids, insane emotional swings, a life void of reason, women are always held on a different standard, and women have to put up with a lot of douche bag guys..."
Now, I actually HAVE put up with some douche bags in my time and every month I DO experience some pretty crazy thoughts that nearly put me over the edge, and women ARE and SHOULD be held on a different standard. As Julie Beck, the Relief Society general President reminded us, "Women have distinct assignments given to them from before the foundation of the world." Wow!
So, I assume that Aman is exaggerating on how he sees things, but maybe not entirely. I feel like I may have been a contributor in some of the negativity and here is why:
I remember just last year when we were at a family party and Aman and I were talking and he asked me how I was doing and what I was up to. I don't remember my exact words but the basic jist of it certainly would have put negatives types of ideas in his head. The sad thing is, is that as I said them I felt a guilty twinge in my heart because I knew they were not true. I had suggested that maybe my kids were driving me crazy and that I questioned my reason for living. Not like I wanted to be dead or anything like that, more like "really? THIS is what I get to do for the rest of my life!?" but only in a kidding, rolling my eyes, sort of way. I think I have gotten better on thinking before speaking since this experience.
I am pretty sure that I have felt like many stay-at-home moms have felt at times. And that is maybe just being a little overwhelmed at times with the responsibilities that go with such a calling. However, one should never joke about the blessings that have been laid before them.
My life IS a blessing and I truly know this. I have been blessed with four of the healthiest, happiest, funnest, and most creative kids that make me laugh and cry all day. I GET to stay home with them and this is an awesome blessing. My husband is my most favorite person in the world; I love him more and more all the time and everyday I bask in that warm thought "This is my eternal companion." He worships me and everyday I try to be worthy of his love for me. He tells me continously how much I mean to him and he melts my heart when he says to me "You know... you ARE a veritable queen." I wouldn't trade this life for anything and I thank God everyday that it's all mine...the craziness, the cooking and cleaning, the running kids around, the LOVE! I know the Spirit abides in our home and I know, without a doubt, that my Father is pleased with my efforts. And, I am grateful to Him for this opportunity.

Priscilla!! You are the best ever! I loved this (ande not only your cool code name for a certain nephew). It is so good to be reminded that the things we do as women are both a blessing and a tremendous assignment from on high (cool quote by the by). Thanks for hte good reminder. Now, if only Aman would find himself someone as cool as you are, he'd be happy as a lark.
my aunties are the coolest people i know. in all sincerity i am humbled by your beauty, inside and out. thank you for being lovely ladies. now if i could just trick a girl like ya'll into wedding me and bedding me i would be a happy little lark. i'm certain i will never understand the deep, mysterious undercurrents of the female psyche, but maybe that's a good thing
p.s. i am your biggest fan Master P. well maybe minus chris
Priscilla, you said, read my blog and so I did as commanded. Of course you are so wise and I love what you wrote. Now if I could only convince Mia that being a girl is not dumb and stupid--she's in Amun's camp on that one. And hey, I love being a woman, now that I've lost my Ute-tress (as Kathy and I like to say) I'm loving it even more.
Amen! Our assignment is a tough one. Child-bearing comes packaged with a lot of unpleasant things--like periods and whacked out hormones. And there are parts of the job that are just plain hard--like sleep deprivation and coping with so many little people needing so much from you all the time. Motherhood has definitely been the ultimate test of my patience and my capacity to love. And sometimes it is easy for us to make jokes about it as a way to deal with the insanity. But as P has reminded us, we should never forget that it is a glorious calling and a sacred obligation to be a mother. And the blessings FAR outweigh the difficulties. My children are the very best thing about me, the very best thing I am doing with my life. I'm sure "Aman" wasn't trying to state his deep down spiritual convictions on the eternal nature of women and motherhood, but it has brought up an issue that we shouldn't ignore--are we showing other future mothers around us that we are HAPPY doing this? Do we make it look like something that they should desire with all their hearts? Or do we belittle our role and make it seem like drudgery?
This is like my favorite post...ever!
I love it! You are an inspiration as a wife, mom, & friend to me. Thanks for the deep thoughts. Being so great withchild at the moment I can't imagine not ever experiencing this. It is such a gift.
what an awesome post! you rock. i would write more but its too hard with a baby in one arm.
Excellent post Priscilla--thanks for telling the truth about us gals! Love, Kath
Yeah! A new post! And a very uplifting one at that. Thanks for sharing. It's great to put things into perspective once in a while. You're an awesome woman. I'm so glad to know you!
Man! I was just commenting to Ashley the other day how I needed to escape my children and at times it is good I do, but she said I must come read this. I too feel guilty for making comments that sound negative or sarcastic, but like you and Kristen said, sometimes its a way to vent a little. I do believe I need to start talking possitively and more lovingly about my most precious little people. It will probably make me feel more of the appreciation I should for them.
And I am so happy that until our young Amam has that fateful day of finding a "Priscilla" of his own, that he is living life so abundantly and experiencing the world, instead of miserable and griping.... I love you and all of this amazing family we belong to. Thanks for the inspiration. You really are the BOMB!
thanks for your comment. i totally appreciated it as i have had a few of those days where I thought the same thing "the rest of my life..." but its nice to take a step back and realize how precious our kids are and the love they bring into our lives. oh now i want to go hug my boys...
That was awesome Priscilla. I too feel like that a lot, kids drive me crazy, am I the only mother who feels this is hard and can't do it? Yet I feel so blessed and love them dearly. I think women are the best.
And by the way, wow tears when your little girl sang, amazing.
Oh so eloquently written!! And yes you are the BEST in so many ways...but I LOVE YOU AS MY OWN ''LITTLE SISTER''!!! So happy to know that you appreciate being a woman, mom, friend, lover, ''auntie'' and the many more titles you will acquire in this life.
Truly love you!!
Yours always ''GATI''
